"Creativity keeps the world spinning on its axis," she professes. It's what holds us all together. And what can also fuse artists to their "activist" leanings. As she states: "The world is the way it is. We have to push it in a different direction-nudge it off of dead center." Mimi does a lot of nudging in Lancaster, serving on the HARB board, the Shade Tree Commission and the Literary Guild, and this summer the Fulton Youth Theatre. It's Mimi Shapiro's version of "Just do it." As a mixed media artist, she often has a plan when she sets out to configure a new book of collage and poetry, but readily admits that it might go very differently. When she reaches into one of her boxes of the thousands of items she's cut out-items that dance with texture and flavor-she may touch one briefly. But then? "Drop it and see what happens," she says.
